About Waterhen Marsh Wildlife Management Area

Waterhen Marsh Wildlife Management Area (WMA) is a significant wetland complex located in northwest North Dakota, near the Canadian border. Spanning approximately 12,000 acres, the marsh provides an essential habitat for a diversity of wetland-dependent species including waterfowl, shorebirds, and various mammals. The mixture of open water, emergent marsh, and surrounding grasslands creates an optimal environment for breeding, nesting, and migration stopover for numerous bird species. Managed by the North Dakota Game and Fish Department, the area has been maintained as a crucial wildlife refuge since its establishment in 1963. The WMA is especially well-regarded for waterfowl hunting in fall, attracting hunters pursuing ducks, geese, and other water birds. Additionally, birdwatchers visit throughout the year to observe species such as sandhill cranes, pelicans, and numerous songbirds. Though there are no extensive developed hiking trails, the management area offers scenic access points and viewing platforms for wildlife observation. The marsh also plays an important role in water filtration and flood control for the region. Nearby landmarks include the rural towns of Crosby and Portal, which provide convenient access to this otherwise remote landscape. Seasonal access is sometimes limited by weather conditions in winter and spring. The area’s quiet, natural setting offers visitors a chance to experience North Dakota’s prairie wetland ecosystems up close while supporting vital conservation efforts.
